Trust in government The trust between Dutch citizens and government in the Netherlands is currently under threat. This is a serious matter, because trust is the foundation for every meaningful reciprocal relationship. Restoring trust between government and individual citizens is the day-to-day task of the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. In the almost 14 000 cases he examines each year, he sees how trust is shaken. From his position as an independent arbiter, the National Ombudsman reflects in this report on the importance of trust. He analyses how trust works and how it relates to proper conduct. He also shows what is required to build – or, where necessary, rebuild – trust between citizen and government. This can be done not only through effective complaints handling when things have gone wrong, but also through proper treatment in the first instance. Trust in Government | 3 Pagina 2
